Frequently Asked Questions

What process do you use and how long do they last?

I basically work with the latest Macintosh computer and Adobe Photoshop software. My printer has always been one of the latest Epsons loaded with the latest carbon inks, or more recently Ultrachrome inks including K3. The paper of choice is usually a matte surface rag archival paper like Somerset Enhanced Velvet or Photo Rag or something similar that Henry Wilhelm (the expert on longevity for the industry) has tested and published unbelievably long life for. 100 years is not unusual today for combinations of ink and paper like I have described. I mat my prints on Westminster 4-ply museum board and overmat the prints with the same board. This combination is then framed using Nielsen™ metal frames, or sometimes wood, and glazed with acrylic that blocks some ultra-violet rays. Most of the prints I have made over the years have been created in a Hasselblad medium format camera. I continue to use medium format film and will also be using high quality digital on occasion. The negatives then are scanned into the computer and prepared for printing. All work is processed and printed to order by Art Schaefer.

Are these prints as good as conventional darkroom prints?

Framed and behind acrylic or glass, most high quality digital prints will look as good as conventional silver prints, and may look even better. Many fine-art photographers have switched to the digital process for many reasons including the mess and time consuming preparation and clean-up they avoid. Even more important are the additional tools and techniques available in the digital world used to bring forth the highest qualities and features inherent in a well-exposed negative and print. You the consumer need not hesitate to buy what some have called a giclée, or inkjet print, especially if you have a money back warranty.

Some of the prints I offer are the traditional silver gelatin prints from my wet darkroom days. These prints are of the highest quality and permanence. Availability will depend on the print selected.

Is a print returnable?

You have 30 days from the date of delivery to return a print in the same condition as originally received for a full refund. Email me at awsimages@comcast.net with any questions.
